I think there’s a variety of reasons for why I am interested. I myself am gay, and I have family and friends that fall under the LGBT+ umbrella. Whilst the UK is becoming more and more accepting, we also live in a world where some people are not, the stigma surrounding LGBT+ people can still be quite shocking at times. I think its important these are addressed as soon as possible. Often young people from ages as young as 10 can start questioning things like their sexual identity and if they are hearing negative things about it, it can have a profound affect. LGBT+ people are more likely to suffer from mental health problems like depression because of this – sexuality doesn’t just stay in the bedroom, it can affect things like your mental wellbeing if not met with understanding so addressing it is important. Being able to understand that being gay or trans isn’t a bad thing, it’s just another way to be, is really helpful to someone who might be questioning their sexuality or gender identity, and it helps to reassure those who may be keeping it a secret that there isn’t anything wrong with them. Sex and sexuality can form part of every day life and being able to have an understanding of those around you helps everyone to live happy and healthy lives!
