Because when I was doing my PhD in Chemistry, I had to write a computer program to calculate the results of my experiments. And I found that writing computer programs was much more fun than performing chemical experiments. Don’t get me wrong, I liked chemistry, and I could have pursued this as a career, but if you had to choose between work and play, then I am sure you would choose play. Writing computer programs was like play to me. It was fun, I loved doing it, and I loved the challenge of getting the computer to do just what I wanted it to do. So it was a no-brainer, as I could write programs at any time and anywhere (at home, on holiday, in the shower etc. – I have had some great programming ideas whilst showering in the morning). You cannot do this with chemistry. You have to have a lab and chemicals!
