So PhD stands for Doctorate of Philosophy. A PhD student is essentially a researcher in training. You need a PhD (in most cases) to carry out your own research unsupervised, so the PhD is kind of a practice go, I have to supervisors that I can go to for advice or help and they ensure that I am not going too off track, but essentially I come up with a research plan that takes around 3yrs full time or 6yrs part time. It should answer one big questions thats made up of slightly smaller questions. But essentially at the end I will be Dr. Dan Taylor – hopefully I’ll also be researching and lecturing full time!
