I want to make sex education videos, ones that are inclusive of all sexual orientations and based in good science. I hope to cover topics like sexual consent, variation of sexualities (LGBT+), those who don’t want to have sex (asexuality and those wishing to take their time), pornography and online dating – the good, the bad and the ugly; lots more too, given the chance!

      Hi Olivia,

The university I work in, is surrounded by a part of Edinburgh that has a lot of schools. But the pupils from those schools are less likely than other parts of the city to go to university to do science.

I want to put the money towards free transport, advertising and people’s time, to invite kids from these schools to a psychology science event where they will learn about what we do with the brain and the mind. I want them to know they are good enough for university study if that is what they want to do.

      Cheers 🙂

I plan to pay for the travel of school kids to visit my university to see what life is like here, to see science in action, to ask questions, and to be enthused about coming to university themselves.

Hello! I’d like to use the prize money to devise a project together with some young people – some way of explaining to other young people what cognitive behavioural therapy is and why it’s useful. It could be animation, film, audio, a play, writing, a comic… I’d like a group of young people to help me decide.
Cognitive behavioural therapy helps with mental health problems and also less severe worries, and I think there are lots of young people under stress who could benefit from some of the ideas.

Well Olivia, I’m delighted that you like the practical side of science, because I would spend the money on equipment for a school which has virtually none. I agree that students like to learn by using their hands and finding things out for themselves, doing experiments and being practical. Some schools in Hull haven’t got money for equipment or resources, so I would give it to an inner-city one I used to work for.

I would use the money to buy equipment to make a podcast about forensic psychology. I think it is difficult for most people to understand the work that happens in prisons – partly because it happens behind locked gates. There are some really interesting, and probably surprising things that happen in prisons, which I think a podcast would be a helpful format to communicate through. I have some colleagues involved in some great work, and I think people would be interested to hear more about it.

Fingers crossed I get to put it to the test!
