Hi Willow, I think having my own children made me start thinking about all the psychology I’d learned about child development, and seeing it in action every day with them. I realised that children and young people are fascinating and that psychology can help us understand them! I watched them develop theory of mind (and with that came lying!) for example. Also, I was less scared of children once I’d had my own – before then I was a bit fearful of how to deal with children and young people because they seemed very unpredictable and I had no real experience of them. It made me more confident, and once I’d decided that child psychology was more interesting (to me) than clinical or forensic or sports or anything else, I just focused on that.
