Question: was this your dream job?

Sally Tilt answered on 4 Mar 2019:
Actually I don’t know if I really knew what a prison psychologist did when I was younger, so it probably wasn’t my dream job as I didn’t exactly know about it. I do like the idea of a ‘dream job’ though and kind of wish that I could say it was!
No one in my family had been to university and the idea of doing a job which relied on knowledge and learning was really appealing – I kind of wanted to have an office and sit at a desk! I chose psychology when I went to university as it sounded interesting, and my A-levels (English, Maths and Biology) seemed to fit with the entry requirements quite well.
If I had a chance to decide what to be all over again, I’d definitely follow the same path. I like the fact that in a prison you can make a big change to people’s lives, and that you can use science to influence decision making. So now I would say that I am doing my dream job!

When I was at school I did not have a dream job. In fact, I really had no idea what I wanted to do. I knew that I liked chemistry as my favourite subject at school, so I took this for A levels. When I still liked it, I took it for my BSc degree. And when I was offered a PhD, I decided to continue studying chemistry. It was only when I started programming for my PhD that I suddenly found something that I really liked to do, and decided that this would be my dream job, because it was not like work at all. It was more like playing games or solving puzzles and challenges, so was great fun to do. When work can be as enjoyable as play, then it really is your dream job.
