I love Charles Darwin because he’s the father of evolutionary theory! I’m an evolutionary psychologist so I use the two subtheories of natural and sexual selection to explain human behaviour. Natural selection examines how traits or behaviours increase survivability. Sexual selection examines how traits or behaviours increase the chance of reproducing (having sex). Sometimes a trait or behaviour can be both naturally AND sexually selective (e.g. women tend to prefer men with muscles – muscles can help you run and fight to survive, and also look nice to many people) or they just one – sometimes with a cost to the other (e.g. a peacock’s tail cannot help it survive, it’s heavy and cannot be used to fly, hindering survival, but a large and well kept tail is very attractive to female peahens), this is known as a costly-signal – it’s attractive because the organism must have genes to pass on if it can survive with such a costly trait! In my work I mostly focus on sexual selection since I examine sexual behaviour and sexuality.
