So people have explored this quite a bit – to understand the impact of being in prison on people. We do know that it is not healthy for people to spend long periods in solitary confinement – with few opportunities to speak to others – and so this is only rarely used, and for short periods.

We also know that people find it difficult to adjust to life outside prison when they are released – the world can seem so big and busy – and often there are many changes if they have served a long sentence. You might imagine what it would be like to leave prison today if you had spent 20 years in prison – even buying a sandwich would be confusing – things like contactless payment cards were not even dreamt of 20 years ago.
