      Thanks for your question – it made me think.

      I’d never been in a prison before I started my job – and I probably only knew what I had seen on TV about them. Now I would say that I feel quite strongly that it is really helpful if people generally understand more about what prisons are like. I’m often surprised when I read in newspapers that ‘prisons are like holiday camps’, or that they are ‘too easy’. That’s not been my experience – and I think it is helpful if people are able to see and understand what prisons are like to live and work in day to day. Nearly everyone in prison today will be someone’s next door neighbour at some point, and so it is in all of our interests that prisons are places that people leave ready to live a good life.
