Actually – you’ve pretty much described what my job is! So my colleagues and I try to gather all the information that we can – by talking to prisoners, reading files, talking to people that they have contact with, and use all the information to put together a story (which we call a formulation) to explain why the offence happened. We use research that has explored models of offending to check that what we are suggesting is likely or probable to be the case.

Once we have a story we can then test it, and also explore which if any of the factors are still present for the person, or what sort of situations might happen in future which could lead them to be triggered again.

Thanks for the question – it’s spot on.
