I guess that some of the conversations that I have with prisoners can be about sensitive topics which can be difficult to discuss. Sometimes I might have to explain something that will be upsetting for the person to hear, and in these situations the other person might be upset or sometimes angry – but I can understand this, and would likely feel quite emotional about my situation if I was sitting in the other seat.
In the main I find that, if people are given a little time to think things through and if you try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes so that they can see that you understand their position (even if they disagree with you) – then the conversation generally goes OK.
